Graveyard Keeper 2 keeps the Technology Tree. In the final pre-launch devlog the developers said they are "keeping the familiar progression through the Technology Tree, while introducing a new talent system designed to make the grind you love so much more enjoyable" — and then added, with visible relish: "Sadly, there will be less grinding this time. We hope you can forgive us."
That is the whole officially confirmed picture. This page explains what it means and what it implies for how you spend progress.
What is confirmed about the Technology Tree?
Precisely two things:
- It returns, and it is familiar. Players of the original game should recognise the shape of progression.
- It gates graveyard modules. The developers confirmed that "through the Tech Tree, you'll unlock unique special Graveyard modules that can be placed at graveyards", with each module providing space for different useful objects: tombs, benches, columbariums, monuments and graves.
Everything else — node names, costs, tier structure, research point sources, and which nodes unlock production versus combat — is unconfirmed.
What is confirmed about the talent system?
Only what the developers said in a single sentence: it is new, and it is designed to make the grind more enjoyable.
That is deliberately thin, and it is worth being honest about what it does and does not tell us. It tells us the talent system is a quality-of-life layer rather than a second progression currency competing with the Tech Tree. It does not tell us whether talents are character-based, zombie-based, or global; whether they are earned by levelling, by quests, or by milestones; or whether they can be respecced.
All of that is unconfirmed. We will not guess.
Why "less grinding" matters more than it sounds
The statement that there will be less grinding is one of the more consequential pre-launch confirmations, because it changes how you should plan.
In the original Graveyard Keeper, long stretches of the game were gated by repetitive resource accumulation. If the sequel genuinely reduces that, then:
- Early unlocks are likely more generous, so you can afford to spend on automation sooner rather than hoarding.
- Bottlenecks shift from quantity to routing. If raw volume is less of a wall, the interesting decisions become what you build and where you put your zombies, not how long you grind.
- Planning tools matter more. When the constraint is routing rather than volume, knowing your required rates and station counts is the difference between a good base and a stalled one — see the production calculator.
What to prioritise in the Tech Tree
No node list exists, so the following is derived from confirmed system dependencies rather than from a published tree. It is a priority heuristic, not a build.
- Anything that unlocks or improves zombie labour. Automation is the backbone of the whole economy, and it is the earliest unlock that pays compounding returns. See zombie automation.
- Graveyard modules. These are a confirmed Tech Tree unlock, and they are the only confirmed way to add space for tombs, benches, columbariums, monuments and graves. If graveyard quality drives income, modules are an economy upgrade disguised as decoration.
- Production capacity and machinery. The store page ties harvesting directly to "build extraordinary machinery, automate production".
- Military equipment, when the Town opens. You craft armour and weapons for your army, so combat progression depends on crafting progression. See weapons and armor.
- Cosmetics last. Many new grave designs and decorations are confirmed to exist, but they do not move any number.
How the Tech Tree connects to everything else
The tree is not a separate track — it is the gate in front of every other system.
| System | What the Tech Tree gates |
|---|---|
| Graveyard | Special modules with space for tombs, benches, columbariums, monuments, graves |
| Automation | Machinery, and by extension underground factory capability |
| Combat | Crafting of armour and weapons for your army |
| Recipes | Which recipes are available — unconfirmed which nodes do this |
Because corpse quality feeds zombie quality, and zombie quality feeds both production and the army, the Tech Tree sits upstream of the game's central feedback loop. Spending it well compounds; spending it on decoration does not.
What is still unknown
Node names, tiers, costs, research point sources, respec rules, the talent list, talent acquisition method, and how the two systems interact. All unconfirmed until September 22, 2026.
FAQ
Is the Technology Tree the same as in the first game?
The developers describe it as "familiar progression", so expect the same shape — but it now runs alongside a new talent system, and the underlying mechanics have changed.
Can I respec talents?
Unconfirmed. Nothing has been published about respeccing.
Do zombies have their own progression?
Yes, separately from both systems. Each zombie has its own skill progression. See the zombie workers guide.
Are graveyard modules cosmetic?
Not purely. They provide space for functional objects — tombs, benches, columbariums, monuments and graves — which is what raises graveyard capacity and quality.
