Combat is the newest pillar in Graveyard Keeper 2. Not a rework — a genuinely new system. The developers list zombie battles alongside conveyor-belt factories as the two "completely new mechanics" in the sequel.
You fight as the Grand Inquisitor (also referred to as the Lord Inquisitor), leading an army of your own zombies against the undead overrunning the Town and the Kingdom.
What is the zombie army, exactly?
It is your workforce, armed. The same zombies that staff your factories are the ones you take into battle — the developers put it as "who could fight zombies better than other zombies... especially those equipped with the finest weapons and armor?"
That dual-use design is the most interesting thing about the system. Every zombie you recruit is a potential worker or a soldier, which means army composition competes directly with production capacity for the same limited pool.
The official description of what you do with them: "arm and train your not-so-smart troops, and slash your way to victory!" The phrasing is deliberate. These are not elite soldiers; they are your intellectually-challenged workforce with weapons.
How does army combat work?
The confirmed loop is: craft equipment, arm your troops, train them, then lead them into battle.
- Craft powerful armour and weapons. Equipment is made, not found — which ties the army directly to your production chains. See the weapons and armor guide.
- Arm and train your troops. Two separate verbs, so expect both an equipment requirement and a training investment.
- Lead them into battle. "Slash your way to victory" implies direct participation rather than auto-resolve, though how much direct control you have is unconfirmed.
The scale, the control scheme, whether battles are real-time or staged, and whether individual zombies can die permanently are all unconfirmed. This page will be rebuilt with tested mechanics after launch.
Towers and fortifications
Defence is a buildable system, not just an army statistic. The official description says you "build towers and fortifications" and "fortify the Town against the undead".
This matters more than it sounds, because of what the developers say about the Town's real problem: with proper defences, "people can live alongside them just fine. In fact, zombies may even become a local tourist attraction."
So fortifications are not about extermination — they are the thing that makes the Town habitable, which is what lets restoration and commerce happen at all. Combat and economics are the same campaign.
Why you should not neglect the army
Three reasons, all grounded in confirmed systems:
- Districts stay reclaimed only if you can hold them. Restoration is described as happening "district by district", which implies reclaimed ground has to be defended.
- Your zombies are shared labour. Every soldier is a worker you are not using, so an oversized army quietly throttles your economy.
- Better zombies make better soldiers. Corruption drives skill development, and skill progression is per-zombie — so the same investment that improves your factories improves your army. See the zombie workers guide.
Practical army management advice
Since no numbers exist yet, these are structural heuristics rather than tested builds:
- Grow the economy first, then the army. Equipment is crafted, so the army scales with production. A big army with no supply chain is worse than a small one with a good one.
- Use your most corrupted zombies as soldiers. Corruption is what lets a zombie develop better skills, and skills presumably carry into combat. Keep the least corrupted on bulk production work.
- Build fortifications before you need them. Defences are what make the Town habitable, and habitable is what makes restoration productive.
- Do not assume losses are free. Whether fallen zombies can be replaced easily is unconfirmed — until it is confirmed, treat troops as a resource you can lose.
How the army fits the wider progression
In the walkthrough structure, the army is stage four — but it starts during stage three, because reclaiming a Town district is the point where you first need it. From there it runs in parallel with restoration: you clear, you fortify, you restore, and you repeat.
The story framing is that you are saving the Kingdom from a zombie apocalypse while also running a business. The developers' summary of the Town's real problem — "hopelessness… and a lack of consumer goods" — is the clearest statement of why you are fighting and building at the same time.
What is still unknown
Essentially all of it, mechanically. Army size caps, unit types, weapon and armour tiers, training costs, tower types and range, battle controls, respawn or replacement rules, and whether zombies can be lost permanently are unconfirmed.
We will not guess at any of these. Check back after September 22, 2026.
FAQ
Is combat mandatory?
Unconfirmed. Nothing states it is optional, and Town reclamation is described in military terms, so assume it is required.
Can my worker zombies fight?
Yes. The developers confirm the same zombies both work and fight, with the fighting ones "equipped with the finest weapons and armor".
Is there base defence, or only field battles?
Both are indicated: you build "towers and fortifications" and lead your army into battle.
Do zombies die permanently?
Unconfirmed. No durability or replacement rule has been published.
Is there a boss or endgame battle?
Unconfirmed. No encounter structure has been revealed.
