On this page

The graveyard is still the heart of Graveyard Keeper 2 — but it is no longer just the place you start. The sequel adds a new layer of graveyard management on top of the original loop, and it is the system that most directly converts your Town investment back into game progress.

This page covers what is confirmed: where the graveyard is, what modules do, and how corpse quality actually scales.

Where is the graveyard, and why it matters

The developers were specific about this, and slightly defensive in a funny way: "The Graveyard will be located in a peaceful and beautiful area outside the city walls, near the Keeper's base. Restoring the Town is one thing, but we're not monsters… we're not going to force you to live inside it."

So your graveyard is a separate, quieter space adjacent to — but not inside — the Town. Two consequences follow:

  • You have a genuine home base. It is not a tutorial area you abandon; it is where your machinery, your modules and your identity as the Keeper live.
  • Travel between base and Town is part of the loop. With no Teleportstone and fast travel via Milestones, that distance is a real cost you should plan around.

What graveyard modules are

This is the confirmed new system. "Through the Tech Tree, you'll unlock unique special Graveyard modules that can be placed at graveyards. Each module provides space for different useful objects such as tombs, benches, columbariums, monuments and last but not least – graves!"

Read that as a capacity system rather than a cosmetic one:

Module objectCategory
GravesCore capacity — the thing you need most of
TombsHigher-tier burial structure
ColumbariumsNiche burial structure
MonumentsPrestige / quality structure
BenchesAmenity structure

The developers also confirm "many new grave designs and decorations so you can make your graveyard truly unique", which is the cosmetic half of the system.

Graveyard modules are the clearest example of the Tech Tree gating something that directly affects your income — see the technology tree guide.

How corpse quality scales with the Town

This is the mechanic that ties graveyard management to everything else, and it is stated in two sentences that deserve to be quoted exactly:

"The larger The Town grows, the more corpses you'll receive. The better supplied and more prosperous (and therefore sinful) The Town becomes, the better the corpses will be too. Each corpse will have more skulls."

In other words there are two independent levers:

  1. Town size → corpse volume. More people, more deaths, more business.
  2. Town prosperity and sinfulness → corpse quality. Better-supplied, more comfortable, more sinful lives produce corpses with more skulls.

That second lever is a deliberate inversion of the original game. In Graveyard Keeper 1 you maximised white skulls. Here, the developers say "now you may find yourself doing the exact opposite" — because corruption, measured in red skulls, is what lets a zombie develop better skills. That is covered in the zombie workers guide.

The loop closes like this: prosperous Town → better corpses → better zombies → better production and army → more prosperous Town.

Practical graveyard priorities

No costs or values are public, so these are structural priorities rather than a tested build order:

  1. Grave capacity first. Burials are your duty and your income; running out of space stalls the whole loop.
  2. Modules that add grave space, before prestige structures. Prestige matters for quality, but volume comes first — an empty monument earns nothing.
  3. Prestige and monuments once volume is stable. This is where you convert graveyard quality into better corpses and, downstream, better zombies.
  4. Decorations last. Confirmed to be plentiful, and confirmed to be cosmetic.

How the graveyard feeds the rest of the game

It is easy to treat the graveyard as the early-game area you graduate from. The confirmed systems say otherwise:

  • Harvesting starts here. You harvest "as much flora, fauna, and human remains as you can" to build machinery and automate production.
  • Corpses become your workforce. Better corpses produce better zombies, and zombies run your economy.
  • Modules are a Tech Tree sink. Late-game Tech Tree spending has a real home here rather than only in production.
  • It stays your base. The developers deliberately kept it outside the Town so you would always have somewhere to return to.

What is still unknown

Module costs, module count, how much space each object takes, whether graves have quality tiers, decoration effects (if any), and how graveyard score interacts with income. All unconfirmed until September 22, 2026.

FAQ

Is the graveyard still the main base?

Yes. It is described as being "near the Keeper's base" in a peaceful area outside the city walls.

Are graveyard modules cosmetic?

No. They provide space for functional objects — tombs, benches, columbariums, monuments and graves — so they are a capacity system as well as a decoration system.

How do I get better corpses?

Grow the Town and make it more prosperous and sinful. Confirmed: bigger Town means more corpses, and a better-supplied, more sinful Town means corpses with more skulls.

Do I still need white skulls?

Unconfirmed. The developers confirm the optimisation has changed and that corruption (red skulls) now drives zombie skill development, but they have not said white skulls are gone.
